Listening for Natural Sounds

Continuing our exploration of quiet this month, there is one place where sound can be as pleasing as quiet. Consider these sounds:
  • Light rain falling on the roof, heavy rain falling steadily, or an occasional crash of thunder followed by silence.

  • Dry wood crackling in the fireplace on a cold winter night or sitting around a campfire.

  • A gentle rippling stream or a rapidly racing stream splashing off rocks.

  • The sound of the ocean when the tide is moving out or when the waves are high and crash on the shore.

  • Awakening in the morning to birdsong or hearing two birds conversing outside of your window.

  • The rustle of leaves as the wind sweeps through the trees or tree limbs bend against the wind.
This week, focus on sounds you hear in nature. Notice how you respond to these natural sounds. Notice what you have learned.

Share what you observe below.

Take good care,

I run a B&B and I love the sound of guests laughing and having a good time. Though we have full soundproofing in the house, the sound of laughter still comes up the stair well from the snooker table.
The best sound was a guest, lets call her Beth, who had come many times before. This time she brought her son and his family to stay. The beautiful sound of the 18th month old granddaughter was like lilting music. The best sound, though, was the responses that Beth made in answer to her granddaughter. Because of the soundproofing the words were never distinguishable but the sounds of love, awe, and thankfulness were clear in the conversations that flowed like a symphony up my stairs.
