The Case of the Humorless Librarian - Part 1

The other day I was in my neighborhood library and went to the front desk to pay an overdue fine. Total = $1. I said to the librarian, “I’ve come to pay my debt to society,” and smiled at him. No response. He just put out his hand and took the dollar bill. It’s always off-putting, but sometimes I run into humorless people. I challenged myself to come up with several scenarios that might explain his behavior. Here are some of them:
  • This unfortunate individual simply has no sense of humor. He was born that way.

  • While I think I’m being friendly and witty, he’s heard it before and is tired of responding to library patrons.

  • He is feeling underpaid.

  • He is feeling overworked.

  • He is feeling under-appreciated.
This week, pay attention to disappointing interactions. Come up with a list of possibilities of why it happened.

Share what you observe below. More next week!

Take good care,
