- Is the goal important to you?
- Have you publicly committed to others to achieve your goal?
- Do you have a strong need to achieve?
- Do you believe you have personal control as you strive to reach your goal?
- Were you the one setting the goal?
- Have you established rewards and incentives or if the goal is not achieved, negative consequences?
- Does what you will achieve if you accomplish the goal seem fair to you?

When setting long or short-term goals it sometimes helps to consider the pleasure/pain consequences of achieving or not achieving most goals.
Of course, given some thought, most normal people will naturally be motivated by the pleasure associated with accomplishment, as opposed to the pain that may result from not meeting goals.
Simple? Yes. Works? Yes.
