Some Practical Solutions to Procrastination

If you have been following this series of short articles on procrastination, you are probably ready for some solutions to procrastinating:
  • Set a timer – Tell yourself you only have to work on whatever you are avoiding for ten minutes. Of course you can do more if you choose, but stick to the ten minutes in a committed and focused way. Starting is the hardest part of any task.
  • Phrase things differently – Instead of “I have to,” try substituting the phrase “I get to” when beginning a task you don’t want to do.
  • Reward yourself – Work hard. Play hard. Promise yourself an appropriate reward for completing a task. Make sure you stick to the task and complete it. Then make sure you give yourself the reward!
  • Use your attention deficit to good advantage – If you have several different things you don’t want to do, using your timer, spend just five minutes on a task, then give yourself permission to move on to the next thing you don’t want to do, but only for five minutes.
