How to Increase Willpower

Last week we looked at the importance of commitment in reaching our goals. Another very valuable and important aspect of goal getting is to know how to increase willpower.

Think of willpower as a type of muscle. Be aware that willpower is not unlimited and does get used up. However, there are ways to strengthen your willpower muscle. Here are some tips:
  • Limit willpower to one thing at a time (don’t try to lose weight, quit smoking and start an exercise program all at once)!

  • Stopping addictive behaviors, managing stress, and making decisions all tire the willpower muscle.

  • Anticipate weakest moments and have a plan in mind (if this happens, I will…).

  • Begin with small willpower challenges and build up to bigger challenges.

  • Increasing willpower in one area of your life will help it spread to other areas.
Experiment with these tips and let us know what happens below!

More next week,

Whether it's a sink full of unwashed dishes, a lawn in need of mowing, or laundry baskets filled to the brim, the willpower to get after these nasty chores just doesn't seem to be present.

Finally, the pleasure/pain principle will kick in and one by one, the chores will get done. Why must some of us wait until a crisis is reached before taking action on simple tasks?

All the best,

Jon
