- There is almost always something that is amusing in even the most dire of situations. If you can, look for it.
- Black humor or gallows humor can sometimes release anxiety in moments of high stress.
- Always use humor in a context of kindness.
- Do be sensitive to others if it is obvious humor is not appropriate in a given situation.

It seems to me that the easiest way to avoid the appearance of being insensitive in a crisis situation is to use "self-deprecating" humor. You can be the brunt of your own humor while easing an uncomfortable situation for others in the process.
Our group of 70+ year-olds does this all the time on the golf course. It works!
