When Disaster Strikes, Stay Calm

What happens, when in spite of all your careful planning, things simply do not go as planned? How do you fill your daily bucket well when a natural disaster strikes or a family member is seriously ill? What happens when suddenly, through no fault of yours, everything around you becomes chaotic and out-of-control? This month, we will focus on strategies for handling emergencies, out-of-control situations, and managing when the unexpected happens.
  • Above all, stay calm. Remember to “hasten slowly.”
  • Deliberately slow yourself down.
  • Remember to breathe!
  • Become laser-focused on the tasks at hand.
  • Make lists and write down all the things you need to do (this will provide an immediate sense of calm).
  • Whenever and wherever possible, create order around you. This task will help you to stay calm.

This may sound too obvious but...it seems to me that anticipation of something unusual, or an event where we may find ourselves out of control may go a long way towards planning our reaction. Think it through in as much detail as possible and be prepared.

Oh, and of course if the situation allows, a sense of humor won't hurt either :-)!

All the best,

Jon
