Recently I found that the idiom, “One bad apple spoils the barrel,” has an element of truth when it comes to interacting with others. While this month I have focused on the impact of kindness, unkind or rude actions can also have a powerful impact.
The other day, I was dropping some gently used items off at a local donation center. A supervisor came to my car and proceeded to tell me in very unfriendly terms all the items they wouldn’t take because it costs millions of dollars for them to get rid of items that couldn’t be re-sold. That certainly made sense to me. What didn’t make sense to me was that I was a customer; innocently attempting to give away items I thought someone else could use. I did not expect to get a lecture.
I noticed I felt disturbed by this interaction for quite some time afterward. Perhaps the supervisor had just come from a staff meeting or was having a bad day. However she did a great job of spoiling my day.
This week, notice the impact of random acts of unkindness. Share your observations below.
Take good care!
