Take Charge of Your 40 Percent!

Positive psychology researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky states that 50 percent of our happiness is actually genetically programed. In other words, we were born that way. Ten percent of our happiness has to do with our circumstances in life (where you live, how much money we have, or even the weather). Here’s the most interesting part: 40 percent of our happiness is self-determined and under our control.

To me, that’s a very significant amount of control! For example, consider these ideas:
  • What changes for the better could you be making? (Get more exercise, upgrade your diet, or get better quality sleep).

  • What changes or improvement could you make in your environment? (Plant a garden, clean out your garage, or go through your mounting in-box).

  • What could you be doing differently in terms of personal relationships? (Contact a friend you haven’t seen in years, reach out to a friend or family member in need, or apologize to someone with whom you have unfinished business).
This week, do some thinking about how you might want to make some changes in your life based on this information. Make some notes and share what you learned below.

Take good care!
